Does Overcharging Battery Affect Its Life?


Batteries are widely used in our daily life which are portable storehouses of energy. The batteries can power common consumer electronics like smartphone, lights, cameras, or be used as backup power to store energy or power for electric vehicles. In order to make the batteries stay power up, charging the batteries is necessary. However, sometimes we may heard about the bad news about batteries of catching fire or other unexpected danger. Mostly, it is resulted from improper operation, such as wrong way to charge the batteries. Whether to charge the smartphones or other electronic gadgets, there may be certain risks, but a good charging habits could be helpful to minimize the risks.

Take lithium-ion batteries as an example, the maximum charging voltage of li-ion batteries is 4.2V, if the batteries is prolonged or extreme over charging, the batteries may increasing heat up and has the potential to cause an explosion finally. In the case of LiFePO4 battery, the absolute maximum is 4.2V per cell, it is recommended that you charge to 3.5-3.6V, because there is less than 1% extra capacity between 3.5V and 4.2V. Therefore, overcharge will not improve the capacity but damage the performance of batteries.

When the batteries finish charging, it is suggested to cut off the power instead of overcharging. For cells that were overcharged, remember to avoid repeated charging them to full voltage. Charging to 80%-90% level of nominal capacity is a good way to avoid further degradation of the cells that were already overcharged. But sometimes charging a battery in a proper way maybe easy to forget.
