Batteries are widely used in our daily life which are portable storehouses of energy. The batteries can power common consumer electronics like smartphone, lights, cameras, or be used as backup power to store energy or power for electric vehicles. In order to make the batteries stay power up, charging the batteries is necessary. However, sometimes we may heard about the bad news about batteries of catching fire or other unexpected danger. Mostly, it is resulted from improper operation, such as wrong way to charge the batteries. Whether to charge the smartphones or other electronic gadgets, there may be certain risks, but a good charging habits could be helpful to minimize the risks.
Here are some common mistakes when charging the batteries:
1. Forget to take off the batteries from charger or cut off the power after the batteries fully-charged;
2. Charging the batteries for a whole day; and much more.
What will happen when the batteries is charging incorrectly?
In the absence of over charge protection of battery, charging batteries in an above wrong way will directly overcharge the batteries. The overcharge will result in damage of the internal cell structure or even cause failure and safety problems of batteries. Take lithium-ion batteries as an example, the maximum charging voltage of li-ion batteries is 4.2V, if the batteries is prolonged or extreme over charging, the batteries may increasing heat up and has the potential to cause an explosion finally. In the case of LiFePO4 battery, the absolute maximum is 4.2V per cell, it is recommended that you charge to 3.5-3.6V, because there is less than 1% extra capacity between 3.5V and 4.2V. Therefore, overcharge will not improve the capacity but damage the performance of batteries.
When the batteries finish charging, it is suggested to cut off the power instead of overcharging. For cells that were overcharged, remember to avoid repeated charging them to full voltage. Charging to 80%-90% level of nominal capacity is a good way to avoid further degradation of the cells that were already overcharged. But sometimes charging a battery in a proper way maybe easy to forget.
Is there anything bringing peace of mind?
For UFO POWER who is dedicated to manufacture lithium-ion battery, its LifFePO4 battery can be the answer to this issue. In case of failure to charge the batteries properly, each UFO LiFePO4 battery has equipped with a BMS which is developed by our R&D team. Battery safety is of great importance for user. The UFO BMS is able to disconnect the battery when it threatens to be over-charged or is discharged. Besides, the BMS also limits the charge and discharge current, monitors the cell temperature, and balances the cells each time a full charge is done which can help bring the cells inside the battery pack to the same state-of-charge. With a LiFePO4 battery, you can better enjoy peace of mind when using battery.
To top it off, UFO LiFePO4 battery can equip with GPRS module, which can offer more convenience for battery in remote area and easier access to battery monitoring. LiFePO4 battery will give you a balance of long duration, high performance, fair cost and low environmental impact.
Pricing of lithium-ion batteries is changing from too much expensive to moderately affordable, and a steady growth of lithium-ion battery can be seen now. They are put to work in various applications, including RVs, electric three-wheelers, electric forklift, marine, while some are going into energy storage system, electric vehicles and telecom tower.
What is a proper charging method?
Actually, the battery may probably has worst degradation when it is fully charged. So that means if you always charge the battery when it get down to 20%, and stop charging when it get up to 80%, it could prolong the battery life.
