What Is an ESS Battery Pack
An ESS (Energy Storage System) battery pack is a high-capacity rechargeable assembly of cells, control electronics and thermal management hardware, built to charge and discharge steadily for years. Single packs reach 100–200 Wh/kg, 90–95% efficiency and operate from -20°C to 50°C. Stacks of packs scale from a home battery to a megawatt container.
Design and Safety Features

- Control electronics — the BMS balances cells, limits current and trips protection on overvoltage, overheating or short circuit.

Quality ESS packs deliver 2,000–10,000 cycles before capacity drops significantly, with LFP commonly reaching 6,000 or more. Depth of discharge, temperature, charge and discharge rate and maintenance habits decide how much of that life a project gets.
